Chinese Weathering Steel Grades

China's weathering steel plates are widely used in bridges, steel structures, landscape architecture, railway projects, containers, and outdoor engineering where long-term atmospheric corrosion resistance is required. Compared with ordinary carbon steel, weathering steel develops a stable protective oxide layer after exposure to the environment, helping reduce corrosion rates and maintenance costs over time.

Common Chinese grades include “Q235NH, Q295NH, Q355NH, Q355GNH,  equivalent grades”, and other weather-resistant structural steels produced according to GB/T 4171. Different grades are selected based on strength requirements, fabrication methods, and service environments.

At CEHE STEEL, we supply a wide range of Chinese weathering steel plates in various thicknesses and dimensions, with cutting, surface processing, and export packaging available. Mill Test Certificates (EN 10204 3.1), third-party inspection, and customized processing can also be provided to meet international project requirements.

Whether your project involves bridge construction, architectural facades, retaining walls, sculptures, railway infrastructure, shipping containers, or outdoor steel structures, our team can recommend the appropriate Chinese weathering steel grade based on your application, mechanical property requirements, and destination market.

    Available Chinese Weathering Steel Grades: Q235NH, Q295NH, Q355NH, Q355GNH and other GB/T 4171 weather-resistant steel plates.

Why Choose Weathering Steel?

Compared with conventional carbon steel, weathering steel offers significant advantages in outdoor environments. After natural exposure, the surface develops a protective rust-like patina that reduces corrosion without affecting structural performance. This makes it an excellent choice for projects that require long service life with minimal maintenance.

    Key Benefits

    Excellent atmospheric corrosion resistance

    Lower maintenance and life-cycle costs

No regular painting required in many environments

    High strength and good weldability

Attractive natural rust finish for architectural projects

Suitable for bridges, buildings, railways, containers, and outdoor structures

FAQ

1. What is weathering steel?

Weathering steel is a low-alloy structural steel that forms a protective oxide layer when exposed to the atmosphere. This layer slows corrosion and helps improve durability in outdoor environments.

2.  Is weathering steel the same as Corten steel?

Corten® is a well-known brand name of weathering steel. Chinese grades such as Q355NH, Q235NH, and  offer similar atmospheric corrosion resistance and are widely used in international projects.

3. Does weathering steel need to be painted?

In many outdoor applications, painting is not required because the protective oxide layer provides natural corrosion resistance. However, coating may still be recommended in marine or highly corrosive industrial environments.

4. What standard is Chinese weathering steel produced to?

Most Chinese weathering steel plates are manufactured according to GB/T 4171, which specifies the chemical composition, mechanical properties, and delivery requirements for atmospheric corrosion-resistant structural steel.
